Storage facilities each have their own way of doing things, and we plan around it before the truck rolls. Tell us the facility, the unit number and the floor, and whether the unit is drive-up or interior, and we'll schedule inside the site's access hours rather than turning up to a locked gate. Most sites want the person on the lease to open the unit or clear us at the office, so we'll either meet you there or work from a gate code and written authorization if the facility allows it. For interior and upper-floor units we bring carts and dollies, keep the corridor and freight elevator clear for other tenants, and load from the bay so nothing blocks the aisle.

On the day, we walk the unit with you and confirm what stays and what goes. Anything you want to keep gets set aside first. Then we empty the unit by hand — furniture, mattresses, boxes, appliances, exercise equipment, tools, shelving and loose clutter — carrying it out to the truck rather than dragging it across the floor. We break down shelving and bed frames where that's the only way through the door. Once it's empty we sweep the unit out so it's ready to hand back or re-let, and then we sort the load: usable furniture and household goods go to a local donation partner, metal, cardboard and electronics go for recycling, and the rest goes to a licensed transfer station. We can't take hazardous material such as paint, chemicals, fuel or asbestos, so flag those when you call and we'll tell you where they can go.
